Abstract

Epigenetika je znanstvena disciplina koja proučava nasljedne promjene u ekspresiji gena koje nisu uzrokovane promjenama u molekuli DNA. Epigenetske modifikacije uključuju metilaciju DNA, modifikacije histona te utjecaj nekodirajućih molekula RNA. Na njih mogu utjecati okolišni faktori, kao što je prehrana. Utjecaj prehrane odnosno komponenata hrane na epigenetske modifikacije jako se istražuje u zadnje vrijeme. Komponente hrane za koje se smatra da utječu na epigenetske modifikacije uključuju polifenole, organosulfurne spojeve, indole te mnoge druge. Važno je razumjeti utjecaj prehrane na epigenetske modifikacije te također utjecaj tih modifikacija na razvoj brojnih bolesti u današnjim i u budućim generacijama. Takvo razumijevanje i odgovarajući odgovor pomoći će nam smanjiti rizik razvoja tih bolesti u budućim generacijama.

Abstract (english)

Epigenetics is a scientific discipline which studies heritable changes in gene expression that are not caused by a change in a DNA molecule. The epigenetic modifications include DNA methylation, histone modifications, and the effect of non-coding RNAs. Environmental factors such as diet can affect them. The effect of diet or dietary components on epigenetic modifications has been under extensive research lately. Dietary components that are considered to influence epigenetic modifications include polyphenols, organosulfur compounds, indoles, and many others. It is important to understand the implications of diet on epigenetic modifications, and also the effect of those modifications on the development of various diseases today and in future generations. Such an understanding and an appropriate response would help us reduce the risk of developing those diseases in future generations.
