Abstract

Burnout syndrome or in other words, exhaustion at work is certainly one of the concepts that is already well-known and described in the Western industrial countries and as one of the fundamental social, but definitely and professional problems. By analyzing the vulnerability of different jobs, jobs in health care proved to be one of the most vulnerable. The emergence of the syndrome becomes more frequent as the key sequence of daily exposure to stress and dissatisfaction. The goal of this thesis was to research the presence and intensity of the burnout syndrome at nurses and technicians in intensive care units. I wanted to show the connection between the intensity of stress based on age, sex, education level and time spent at this position. Respondents and methods The research was conducted at KBC Zagreb and it was focused on all nurses and technicians that are working in an intensive care unit. For research purposes I used “Questionnaire about burnout intensity at work”. The result The result of this analysis conducted on the theme, about burning out at the workplace, is based on 96 respondents. The analysis of those 96 questionnaires has showed that the range of the results was from 18 till 47. The maximum number for stress intensity covered in this questionnaire is 54. Approximately half of all respondents ( 47; 49%) results could be classified in the category “showing no burnout syndromes” , based on the standard norms of the questionnaire. A smaller group, approximately one third ( 31; 32,3%) are showing first signs of burnout syndrome. The last, approximately one fifth (18; 18,8%) showed signs of “high level of burnout syndrome”. Conclusion. It would be of great significance to establish a prevention program to reduce the impact of the burnout syndrome and to establish teams of professionals in every organization to work on the prevention of burnout syndrome.
