Abstract

According to research in the past decades, patient’s environmental surfaces and objects in hospital wards play a significant role in transmitting pathogens and causing healthcareassociated infections. Since in the past years we have been facing the problem of decreasing surface hygiene, the purpose of this paper is to show where our efforts should be directed to insure satisfactory hygiene in hospital wards, primarily in the patient zone. Starting with the theoretical basis of healthcare-associated infections and pathogens, via patient’s environmental surfaces and the related role of hospital staff, this paper presents preventive measures of transmission of pathogens via surfaces through introducing quality cleaning and disinfection of patient’s environmental surfaces and objects in hospital wards, for the purpose of preventing healthcare-associated infections. At the end an anonymous, specially designed questionnaire on the hygiene of hospital surfaces, including 160 nurses from 11 healthcare, hospital-type institutions is presented. In the analysis methods of descriptive statistics and the X2 test with a significance level of all P-values of less than 0.05 are used. The analysis of the questionnaire results verifies the presumption that the knowledge about the danger of healthcare-associated infections and the measures of their prevention, as well as a satisfactory supervision of the quality of hygiene in hospitals is in close correlation with the prevention of the transmission of pathogens via environmental surfaces in hospital wards. Conclusion: Cleaning and disinfecting environmental surfaces is the most important factor in preventing the transmission of pathogens via environmental surfaces in hospital wards. The most responsible participants in cleaning and disinfecting environmental surfaces in hospital wards are the staff, who need to be available, adequately trained and prepared to follow precise directions for cleaning all types of environmental surfaces, including the continuous evaluation of their performance.
