Abstract

Objective: The aim of this work is to contribute to build a system which helps to preserve health and safe working conditions of health exposed which are exposed to the effects of cytostatics. First of all, to explain the procedures and precautions to be taken to reduce the level of cytotoxic drugs in the work area, and therefore the risk to which health workers are exposed. Conclusion: Due to proven mutagenic, carcinogenic and teratogenic properties, occupational exposure to anti-neoplastic drugs is associated with numerous health risks. Most drugs for the treatment of malignant disease belongs to a group of dangerous drugs. Analysis of blood samples of medical staff working in various institutions around Croatia showed that the level of cytogenetic damage in the exposed population largely depends on the work habits and adherence to personal protection measures in work. In order to reduce the negative consequences of exposure, it is necessary to introduce a centralized preparation of cytotoxic drugs, which would be carried out by trained pharmacists, constant control and continuous education. Also what is important is the inclusion of cytogenetic control of exposed health workers during regular medical examinations.
