Abstract

Moždani udar je vodeći uzrok morbiditeta i mortaliteta u svijetu. U skladu sa starenjem populacije, procijenjeno je da će do 2020. godine moždani udar biti vodeći uzrok gubitka zdravih godina života. Moždani udar je po učestalosti treći uzrok smrti, drugi uzrok demencije pa su njegovi troškovi ogromni. To je bolest čije liječenje ovisi o brzini dolaska u hitnu službu, no bolesnici i njihove obitelji često prekasno traže pomoć. Istraživanja su pokazala kako je aktivacija hitnih službi jedan od najvažnijih faktora u poboljšanju prehospitalne njege i kako je slabo prepoznavanje simptoma MU možda djelomično odgovorno za odgodu dolaska u hitnu službu. Manjak spoznaje javnosti o simptomima MU je smatran jednim od ključnih uzroka kasnog dolaska u bolnicu. Brza pojava pacijenata u hitnim službama (HS) cilj je koji ovisi najviše o mogućnosti da ljudi na vrijeme prepoznaju simptome i kontaktiraju hitnu službu. Ovaj rad istražuje koje su dosadašnje spoznaje pacijenta o MU i njihovom prvom kontaktu sa hitnim službama. Opće znanje o MU – u mora biti poboljšano kako bi pojedinci sa simptomima čim prije došli u HS. Općenito, znanje o simptomima odnosno prepoznavanju MU je loše. Unatoč tome, većina pacijenata navodi da bi kontaktirala hitnu službu kad bi osjetili simptome MU. Buduće kampanje za podizanje svijesti o MU trebale bi ohrabriti ljude da reagiraju kad prepoznaju simptome MU i upute bolesnike na hitnu.

Abstract (english)

Stroke is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Due to ageing population worldwide, it has been estimated that by 2020 stroke will be the leading cause of the lost healthy years of life. Stroke is the third commonest cause of death, the second cause of dementia, and its cost is massive. Stroke is a time-dependent condition, but patients and families sometimes delay seeking care. Studies have suggested that the activation of emergency medical services (EMS) is one of the most important factors in instigating pre-hospital care and that poor recognition of the symptoms of stroke may be partially responsible for delays in accessing the EMS. Lack of community awareness of stroke symptoms has always been considered to be one of the major causative factors for delayed presentation. Achieving rapid patient presentation relies mainly on the public’s ability to identify the symptoms and to contact the EMS without delay. We aim to explore the literature surrounding knowledge of stroke and patients initial engagement with health services. Generally, levels of knowledge about recognising stroke symptoms are poor. Community knowledge of stroke needs to be enhanced so that individuals present earlier. Nevertheless, most patients stated they would contact the EMS at the onset of stroke symptoms. Future stroke public awareness campaigns should encourage members of the public to assist where signs of stroke are recognized and direct patients to emergency services.
