Abstract

Alge su vodeći proizvođači organske tvari i kisika te čine osnovu hranidbenog svijeta. Svojom veličinom variraju od jednostaničnih oblika koji slobodno lebde u vodi, do stanica koje su udružene u filamente, kolonije ili višestanične taluse. U posebnim uvjetima eutrofikacije, na koju najviše utječu ljudske djelatnosti, mogu se umnožiti do tih razmjera da formiraju gustu biomasu na površini slatkovodnih i morskih voda. Ovakvi fenomeni cvjetanja algi predstavljaju ozbiljnu prijetnju za okoliš. Mnoge vrste proizvode toksične metabolite koji su uzrok obolijevanja mnogih životinja, ali i čovjeka. Prijavljeni su simptomi od kojih je većina nespecifična, ali postoje i jasno definirani sindromi vezani za otrovanja ovim vrstama algi i njihovim toksinima. Poznajemo nekoliko metoda kontrole cvjetanja algi. Nažalost, mnoge nisu praktične i imaju teške ekološke nuspojave.

Abstract (english)

Algae are the leading producers of organic matter and oxygen and form the basis of the food chain of the water world. They vary in size rangin from unicellular froms wich float freely in the water to multicellular forms united in filaments, colonies, or thalluses. In special conditions of eutrophication, that is mostly impacted by human acts, algae can proliferate into dense biomasses on the surfaces of sea and freshwater. The phenomena called algal bloom, pose a serious threat to the environment. Many species produce toxic metabolites which influence the health of human and animals. Symptoms that have been reported are mostly non specific, but there are also clearly defined syndromes related to poisoning with this algal species. There are several methods of controlling algal blooms. Unfortunately, many are not practical and have severe enviromental impacts.
