Abstract

Prema Svjetskoj zdravstvenoj organizaciji, prevalencija debljine među djecom starosti 5 do 19 je porasla sa 4% na preko 18% u razdoblju od 1975. do 2016. godine. Zbog već desetljećima poznatih rizika za zdravlje koje donose prekomjerna tjelesna masa i debljina jasno je kako je od velike važnosti provoditi epidemiološka istraživanja debljine u dječjoj populaciji. Najbolji alati za ta istraživanja su antropometrijske mjere za određivanje debljine. Indeks tjelesne mase se najduže i najčešće koristi no zbog brojnih kritika na njegov račun, konstantno se ispituju alternativne mjere. Cilj ovog rada je sistematično prikazati prednosti i nedostatke najčešće korištenih antropometrijskih mjera za određivanje debljine u djece te ih direktno usporediti. Kao alternative indeksu tjelesne mase najčešće se koriste opseg struka, omjer opsega struka i visine te mjerenje debljine kožnog nabora. Usporedba navedenih mjera pokazuje kako je indeks tjelesne mase i dalje dovoljno dobar za epidemiološka istraživanja debljine u djece no da postoji i korist u mjerenju opsega struka.

Abstract (english)

According to the World Health Organization, the prevalence of obesity in children aged 5 to 19 years has increased from 4% to over 18% in period from 1975 to 2016. Because of health risks that come with overweight and obesity, known for decades, it is clear that it is of utter importance to conduct epidemiological studies of childhood obesity. The best tools for these studies are anthropometric measures for determining obesity. The oldest and most commonly used method is the body mass index, but due to abundant criticism new methods are continuously being developed. The aim of this review is to systematically show advantages and disadvantages of the most commonly used anthropometric methods for determining childhood obesity and to compare them directly. The most common alternatives to body mass index used are waist circumference, waist to height ratio and skinfold thickness measurement. Comparison of aforementioned measures shows that body mass index is still a sufficiently good measure for determining childhood obesity, though, there is an added benefit to waist circumference measuring.
