Abstract (english) It is interesting and at the same time hard to understand how music is so important and so frequently used in our lives. Even ancient people knew of its healing potential and used it for calming sick people, in various rituals, ceremonies and other happenings. The fact that music as a health intervention today is equal to many other health interventions in many countries all over the world speaks for itself. In the last 50 years a number of articles and research papers about music in medicine has rapidly increased and they are more detailed than ever. Music and music therapy are widely used in diagnostics of various illnesses (most frequently in evaluation of children with autism), but they can reveal a lot about the person and the way he/she reacts on new situations and other people. Nowadays there are hundreds of types of music therapy. Five of them are going to be described here: Guided Imagery in Music – the Bonny Method, Analitically Oriented Music Therapy – the Priestley Model, Creative Music Therapy – the Nordoff-Robins Model, Free Improvisation Therapy – the Alvin Model and Behavioral Music Therapy. Music and music therapy are used in therapy of different psychiatric disorders: depression, schizophrenia, psychological trauma, insomnia, addictions and anxiety disorders, where active (music improvisation) and receptive (passive, listening to music) therapy can be used. To become a music therapist, nowadays it is eligible to finish one of the music therapy training programs. However, as it can be seen from the example of the founders of many music therapy training programs, it is not the only way to become a music therapist, but a lot of experience and good results in work with patients are needed thereby. In this review the use of music in diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders will be explained based on the information available in articles, and as such it can be used as a short overview of the today’s use of music in psychiatry.
