Abstract

Neplodnost pogađa milijune ljudi diljem svijeta, a procjenjuje se da se s njom suočava 8 – 12 % parova reproduktivne dobi. Budući da je neplodnost multifaktorijalni problem kojemu je potrebno sveobuhvatno pristupiti, a postoji velik udio u neplodnosti žene kojemu je etiologija nepoznata, kao mogući uzrok neplodnosti nametnula se celijakija. Celijakija se može manifestirati uobičajenim gastrointestinalnim simptomima kao što su bolovi u trbuhu i proljev, ali i netipičnim simptomima kao što su anemija, osteoporoza i neplodnost. Izvancrijevnemanifestacije uključuju herpetički dermatitis, neurološke simptome, artritis i ulkuse u usnoj šupljini. Terapija se sastoji od doživotne i stroge bezglutenske dijete koja dovodi do kliničkoga poboljšanja simptoma i sprječava komplikacije ove bolesti što posljedično povećava mogućnost začeća. Rad iznosi detalje o celijakiji, koja je kao bolest sve češća u današnjoj populaciji, kao i pregled nekolicine istraživanja koja su dokazala njezin utjecaj na (ne)plodnost.

Abstract (english)

Infertility affects millions of people worldwide, with an estimated 8-12% of couples of reproductive age facing this issue. Since infertility is a multifactorial problem that requires a comprehensive approach, and a large proportion of female infertility has an unknown etiology, celiac disease has emerged as a potential cause of infertility. Celiac disease can manifest with common gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal pain and diarrhea, but also with atypical symptoms such as anemia, osteoporosis, and infertility. Extraintestinal manifestations include dermatitis herpetiformis, neurological symptoms, arthritis, and oral ulcers. The therapy consists of a lifelong and strict gluten-free diet, which leads to clinical improvement of symptoms and prevents complications of this disease, consequently increasing the likelihood of conception. The paper details celiac disease, which is becoming more common in today's population, as well as a review of several studies that have proven its impact on (in)fertility.
