Abstract

Theoretical basis: Developmental hip disorder requires application of a corrective orthosis and the one that has been used for a long time is the Pavlik harness. The aim of this study is to clarify if the parents who have been specially educated outside the orthopaedic office are more satisfied and have less problems dealing with the Pavlik harness than the parents who had a routine education in the orthopaedic office. Methods: A special questionnaire has been used for this study and distributed by the examiner. A sample is randomized and includes 109 parents divided in two groups. The first group of 55 parents had a special education about the Pavlik harness and the second group of 54 parents got only basic information about the Pavlik harness at time of their first application. The questionnaire is anonymous and the same for each group of parents. Collected data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical methods (arithmetic mean, standard deviation, Wilcoxon test). Significance was determined at a P value of less than 0.01. Results: There is no difference in terms of parents’ age and their education level as important factors for the effective information prehension. There is a statistically significant difference between a level of satisfaction with the Pavlik harness education in the control and experimental group of parents, Wilcoxon test P<0.01 for every questionnaire part. The parents in the experimental group are more satisfied with the education. Conclusion: Parents of the children who have the Pavlik harness applied are more satisfied with the information and practical experience they got from the medical staff during a special education. It is easier for them to understand the information they got from the medical staff during the education than to understand those they got during a routine outpatient check.
