Abstract

Speech cortices are an extensively researched topic. Here is presented a review of articles that illustrate areas of activation for speech comprehension and speech production through fMRI. Activation is reported for: prelexical speech processing in Heschl’s gyrus, temporal poles and pars opercularis; word speech comprehension in bilateral superior temporal lobes and left angular gyrus; sentence speech comprehension the middle temporal gyrus, bilateral anterior temporal poles, left angular gyrus, and the posterior cingulate and preceuneus; for sematic constraint, syntax and prosody in left pars orbitalis, the right inferior frontal, the amygdala and cingulate cortex. Speech production activates the same set of regions as speech comprehension but in addition, activation is reported for: left middle frontal cortex, the left anterior insula, the left putamen, pre-SMA, SMA, and the motor cortex. FMRI is also a non-invasive method for pre-operative assessment of language lateralization and localization.
